Vietnam Veterans Day is March 29!

Raising money for the PBR

As a part of our commitment to honoring Vietnam Veterans this March, Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum hopes to restore the Mark 1 Patrol Boat (PBR), located in the museum’s Vietnam Experience Exhibit. You can help bring her back to life by donating to the USS Yorktown Foundation’s campaign to raise the $15,000 needed for the restoration.

The PBR was a versatile boat with a fiberglass hull and water jet drive, which enabled it to maneuver in shallow, weed-choked rivers during the Vietnam War. The 31’ river patrol boat and its crew were used to stop and search river traffic in South Vietnam and were an integral element of the “Brown Water Navy.”

Patriots Point’s PBR usually floats in a lagoon as part of the Vietnam Experience Exhibit, which opened in 2014. Over the last few years, nature has taken its toll, and the boat needs some repair.

The following list is an outline of the work that will be done to preserve the vessel.
  • Fiberglass repair throughout the entire vessel, emphasis on areas below the waterline
  • Removal of hull fittings so that the hull can be free of penetrations that could lead to leaks
  • Replacement of canopy frame and canvas
  • Replacement of rotten decking
  • Improvement of rainwater mitigation
  • Repair and replace armor plating
  • Sanding and repainting of boat
  • Restoration of deck hardware and fittings
  • Repairs to mast and radar dome
  • Improvement of bilge systems

There are two ways to donate to the Riverine Patrol Boat (PBR) Restoration campaign. You can donate through our website by selecting "Museum Experience" and writing 'PBR' in the "Additional Comments Section. Or you may donate through the dedicated Facebook Page.

Special Message
USS Yorktown

Honoring history and heroes in an awe-inspiring setting, Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is America’s first aircraft carrier museum. Nearly 300,000 people visit Charleston Harbor every year to relive history aboard our legendary ships – and to behold the only Vietnam Naval Support Base Camp in the United States, Medal of Honor Museum, and the Cold War Submarine Memorial. Patriots Point is South Carolina’s leading heritage attraction, and with your help, we can maintain this distinction for generations to come. To preserve the living history of Patriots Point, we need all hands on deck. Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum receives no funding from federal, state, or local governments for operations. The USS Yorktown Foundation, a 501(C)3 non-profit organization, is the fundraising arm of the Museum. Your donation will help fund new and enhanced exhibits, new educational programs, scholarships to bring underserved students to the Museum, and upgrades to the museum’s technology to keep Patriots Point a dynamic, interactive and imaginative learning experience.
